MySQL founder tries a new software licensing model — TechCrunch

When it comes to open-source licenses, developers have their fair share of choices (GPL, BSD, MIT, Apache, etc.), all of them with their own pros and cons. The same goes for commercial licenses. MySQL founder Michael “Monty” Widenius and his co-founder David Axmark, however, came up with a different model a few years ago: the…

Mimo’s new app teaches you how to code on your iPhone — TechCrunch

Apple’s new iPad app Swift Playgrounds is popularizing the idea of learning to code on mobile devices, not desktop computers. But its focus is only on teaching kids to code in Swift. A new application called Mimo goes beyond that, with mini-lessons for not only Swift, but also HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, SQL and more. The…

The marketing We deserve

The marketing we deserve

(re-posted from Seth Godin’s Blog – επειδή είναι πολύ καλό)

We say we want sustainable packaging…

but end up buying the one in fancy packaging instead.

We say we want handmade, local goods…

but end up buying the cheap one, because it’s ‘just as good.’

We say we want the truth…

    but end up buying hype.

We say we want to hire for diversity (of thought, culture and background)…

but end up hiring people who share our point of view in most things.

We say we want to be treated with respect…

but end up buying from manipulative, selfish, short-term profit-seekers instead.

We say we don’t want to be hustled…

but we wait for the last-minute, the going-out-of-business rush or the high pressure push.

It actually starts with us.

Here’s the thing. It also starts with anyone with the leverage and power and authority to make something.

Because even if it’s the marketing we deserve, it’s also the marketing they create.

Continue reading

Ορολογία της Ημέρας (T.O.D) – 09/05/2016 [innovation process management]

innovation process management

Innovation process management (IPM) is a systematic approach to nurturing the creative capabilities of employees and creating a workplace environment that encourages new ideas for workflows, methodologies, services or products.

In information technology (IT), innovation processes often fall into one of two categories: “pushed” or “pulled.” A pushed process occurs when a company has access to existing or emerging technologies and wants to find a profitable application for it. A pulled process occurs when a company focuses on the customers’ needs and tries to figure out a new or better way to meet them.

Gartner’s recommendation to IT leaders interested in launching an innovation management program is to follow a disciplined approach. Here are five steps Gartner recommends IT leaders and their companies take to develop an innovation management program:

  • Strategize and plan: Settle on an agreement of the vision for the initiative that is also in line with business goals. Then establish the resources and budget, and integrate the vision with IT and business plans.
  • Develop governance: Establish a process for making decisions. This includes identifying and engaging stakeholders, agreeing on who is in charge and what the flow for decision making is and also having feedback mechanisms in place.
  • Drive change management: Have systems by which people can communicate and socialize via multiple channels; get buy-in from stakeholders at all levels and assess which open innovation initiatives and cultural shifts will help the company optimize contributions to innovation.
  • Execute: Make sure to draw from a wide range of sources to generate ideas for innovations that will transform the business, align the initiatives with business goals and then update and drive new elements of the initiatives in response to changing business requirements.
  • Measure and improve: Once the innovative initiative is in place, monitor and measure how it has affected business outcomes. It is also important to seek feedback from stakeholders and to continue to study innovation best practices and case studies from other organizations. Also make sure to continually drive improvements through process changes and upgrades.

Ορολογία της Ημέρας (T.O.D) – 08/05/2016 [hybrid cloud]

hybrid cloud

Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing model that uses a mix of on-premises, private cloud and third-party public cloud services.

Allowing workloads to move between private and public clouds as computing needs and costs change can provide businesses with greater scalability and more data management options. For example, an enterprise can deploy an on-premises private cloud to host sensitive or critical workloads but pay a public cloud provider to host less-critical resources such as test and development workloads or customer-facing archival and backup data.

Having the ability to use public cloud resources when required eliminates the need for a company to make massive capital expenditures to accommodate short-term spikes in demand. Hybrid cloud deployments are particularly valuable for dynamic or highly changeable workloads. For example, a transactional order entry system that experiences significant demand spikes around the holiday season is a good hybrid cloud candidate. The application can run in the private cloud, but burst out to thepublic cloud when computing demands spike. Big data analytics is another good candidate for hybrid cloud. A company could use hybrid cloud storage to retain its accumulated operational, sales and test data and run analytical queries in the public cloud.

Cloud orchestration programming and management tools such as Egenera PAN Cloud Director, RightScale Cloud Management and Scalr Enterprise Cloud Management Platform can help businesses deploy and govern applications across public and private clouds and handle the logistics of workflow, including billing. Despite its benefits, however, the complexity of a hybrid cloud deployment can present technical, business and management challenges.

Because private cloud workloads must access and interact with public cloud providers, network connectivity must be strong and APIs must be compatible. In some cases, workloads slated for hybrid cloud must be redesigned to address the specific providers’ APIs. SLA breaches and public cloud service disruptions can also negatively affect performance of a hybrid cloud. To mitigate these risks, organizations can architect hybrid workloads that interoperate with multiple public cloud providers. However, this can complicate workload design and testing.

Ευχαριστούμε και πάλι.

IV.
