Ορολογία της Ημέρας (T.O.D) – 27/1/2017 [Misfortune Cookie]

Misfortune Cookie is a firmware vulnerability in many older routers.

Once the embedded software running the device is exploited, the attacker can gain administrative privileges and use the device to gather data, steal credentials or upload malicious files to networked devices. Continue reading

Small Plastic Birds protecting Huge Metal Ones > Flappy bird-drone keeps airports safe — TechCrunch

Remember that plane that landed in the Hudson? The whole saga started with a bird strike. Birds at airports can be a terrifying ordeal, so you’d be unsurprised to hear that airports pay a pretty penny to keep the area around an airport clear. Clear Flight Solutions’ Robird is a drone that flaps its wings…

On bots, language & making tech disappear — TechCrunch (βγαίνουν τα σώψυχα αν μιλάς με botakia?)

This year’s new buzzword in computer design circles is without question “bots.” As with anything we build, we give bots names. A name can be a way of expressing trust in an object — or expressing control over it. But giving a bot an identity isn’t always for the best. Calling a bot Siri does…

Ορολογία της Ημέρας (T.O.D) – 12/1/2017 [Fruit of the poisonous tree]

Fruit of the poisonous tree is a legal doctrine according to which any secondary evidence obtained indirectly through illicit means is inadmissible in court.

Examples of such sources include evidence gained through eavesdropping, illegal wiretapping, coercive interrogations, unwarranted searches or improperly conducted arrests. Information obtained from those sources is inadmissible according to the law of exclusion. The fruit of a poisonous tree doctrine is an extension to that law. Continue reading

Ορολογία της Ημέρας (T.O.D) – 11/01/2016 [Greedy Algorithm]

A greedy algorithm is a mathematical process that looks for simple, easy-to-implement solutions to complex, multi-step problems by deciding which next step will provide the most obvious benefit.

Such algorithms are called greedy because while the optimal solution to each smaller instance will provide an immediate output, the algorithm doesn’t consider the larger problem as a whole. Once a decision has been made, it is never reconsidered. Continue reading

Ορολογία της Ημέρας (T.O.D) – 10/1/2017 [Net Neutrality]

Net neutrality is the principle that data packets on the Internet should be moved impartially, without regard to content, destination or source. Net neutrality is sometimes referred to as the “First Amendment of the Internet.”

In the United States, high-speed Internet service providers (ISPs), including AT&T, Comcast, Time Warner and Verizon, have sought support for a two-tiered Internet service model. In a two-tiered model, providers would be able to charge content providers a premium fee for priority placement and faster speed. Continue reading

Smart Homes – Smart toasters – smart stuff everywhere…

My favorite thing, hands down, about the Griffin Connected Toaster is the slider on the app. On one side is an icon of a white piece of bread. On the other, is one that’s all black. Sure, a smart toaster is the epitome of connected appliance ridiculousness, but there’s something to be said for being…

The complexity of seeking a cure for cancer has vexed researchers for decades. While they’ve made remarkable progress, they are still waging a battle uphill as cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Yet scientists may soon have a critical new ally at their sides — intelligent machines — that can attack…

Matibabu – Νέες Εξελίξεις στην Υγεία – ενάντια στην Μαλάρια

Matibabu, which is competing in our Hardware Battlefield at CES today, isn’t looking to cure any diseases. Instead, the Uganda-based company is looking to make it easier to diagnose malaria so those who are infected can get the right help faster. I actually first ran into Matibabu back in 2013 when the team competed in…
